Foxton Borough Council.

The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last night. Present-The Mayor (Mr G. A. Simpson), Councillors Gower, Stiles, Coley, Spelman, Baker, Spiers, and Symons. The minutes were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was dealt with : ~ From the Post and Telegraph Department, regarding the broken poles, and stating they were willing - to deliver them over to the Council, From the Foxton Athletic Club, acknowledging receipt of the Council’s letter, and stating that the (Hub cannot move in the matter this vear. From the Land Income Tax Department, forwarding voucher |pr £ll2 4s. Prom the Treasury, forwarding amounts due to the Council. Prom J. Vile, Esq., M H. 8., stating that he had written to the Minister for Railways urging him to erect a verandah to the Foxton railway station, but did not hold out much hope of the work being dope, owing to the present financial From J. Vile, Esq., M.H.R., asking if the Council intended proceeding further in the matter of . taking over the native cemetery reservef adding that he would be pleased to further assist the Council in the matter. , ... „ The Mayor said he had written Mr Vile on the subject, stating that until the Maoris wrote asking the Council to take over the land on trust, nothing further ean oe don* Mr F. T. Martin of the MumcißU Association, wrote stating that when an Act declares that the income to be derived from a certain reserve shall be expended in the improvement of the said reserve and for no other purpose, legislation is neoesaary to authorise the expenditure of any surplus income on any reserve or otherwise. The Mayor explained that he had seen the Minister for Lands, who wanted the particulars which had since been forwarded to Mr Duncan. From Soy Lee. asking for permission to erect a verandah over his shop in Park street, —Granted. _ From E. Ball, resigning his position as librarian. -Accepted. From Mr Gray, asking for balance of his account.— Referred to the* Reserves Committee. Mr Doyle attended in support of a claim for refund on extra kerosene which he had been compelled to use since the new lamps were put m. Considerable discussion ensued on Mr Doyle’s account, Councillors expressing themselves dissatisfied pth irregular account sent in and the manner in which the lamps were atted to. Eventually it was resolved that Mr Doyle be asked to make , a specific charge for the extra oil used since the new lamps were put in, the Council to consider the same at next meeting; also to furnish the Council with the account for the previous seven months, showing the amount of kerosene used. The various reports were then read and adopted, and the accounts passed for payment. Proposed by Cr. Spiers and seconded by Cr. Symons, that the culvert mentioned in the overseers report be not done until further ordered, • Carried. Proposed by Or. Gower and seconded by the Mayor, that the Council agreee to provide proper culverts and drains on No. 6 Line from the junction of Howan street to Moutoa road, and from No. 6 Line to Messrs Hickson and Reeve’s paddock, provided the owners of property agree to make and maintain outlet drains through their property.-—Carried. Proposed by Or. Stiles and seconded by Cr. Baker, that the Public Works Committee visit and report on Friday next upon the condition of the culvert in Coley street in front of Mr R Walsh’s residence; also as to the condition of road by Mr Walker’s, these works being considered necessary by the Inspector of Nuisances.—Carried. The tender of Mr John Reeve for the position of ranger at 83 per head was accepted. One other tender was sent in, hut as no deposit was enclosed, it was declared to be informal.

Four tenders were received for the position of librarian. After a short discussion, it was proposed by _Cr. Baker and seconded by Cr. Stiles, that Mr and Mrs S. Wilson be appointed*—Carried. It was resolved that the tenders for fencing the Foxton Marine Parade be forwarded to the Tourist and Health Department, with a recommendation that Mr Andresen’s tender be accepted. Proposed by Cr. Symons and seconded by Cr. Gower, that the Town Clerk be instructed to sue for all unpaid rates on and after the ist October, taking one or more names from each letter as they appear in alpha. betical order in the rate book.— Carried. * Proposed by Cr. Baker and seconded by Cr. Stiles, that a special meeting of the Borough Council be held on the second Monday in October; at 7.30 p.m., to adopt the second schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act.—s Carried,

It was decided to call tenders for planting with sand grass and covering with scrub where required, the sand dritt in the 'reserve occupied by Mr D. Purcell j tenders to be in by Monday, September xgth. A special meeting of the Council will be held on Monday to consider the tenders. Proposed by Cr. Gower and seconded by Cr. Coley, that Messrs D. Purcell. and H. Coley be requested to remove the gorse growing on the reserves leased by them. —Carried. Cr. Spellman introduced a deputation from the Foxton Brass Band, consisting of Bandmaster McKennie and three other members of the Band, requesting the Council to take over tne instruments, uniforms, etc., to be held as the Council’s propertyIt was resolved that the Council attend a meeting of the Band on Monday night, for the purpose of receiving the instruments, etc., of the Band, as the property of the Council. The Council then rose.
