+- MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Football Banquet and Concert Committee was held in the Manawatu Hotel on Thursday evening last, Mr Shadbolt occupying the chair. It was decided to hold the banquet in the Foxton Town Hall, on September 21st, and the secretaries were authorised to arrange the catering. A programme committee was then elected, comprising the following members of the various clubs :—S. Wright (Awahou), P. Jenks (Old Boys), ! R. Leggs (Huia), A. Shadbolt (Moutuiti), R. Hickson (Wanderers), W. Hooker (Kiwi). The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair and to Mr Levett for the use of the room. NOTES. A correspondent of the Wellington Post is responsible for the following: — “ The New Zealand team that visited Australia in 1884 was being entertained at Sydney, the present Chief Justice (Sir Edmund Barton) in the chair, when some of the Australians pressed Jack Taiaroa, the famous Otago half, for a speech in Maori. But the New Zealanders could not get Taiaroa out of his chair —he protested that he did not know what to talk about. ‘ Say the Lord’s Prayer,’ whispered one of the Otago men. Taiaroa got up and recited the Prayer, and was duly thanked for his felicitous speech in his native tongue. The Australians only learned the truth some time afterwards."
