Sessional Notes.
The following extracts from the Order Paper will be of intei’est to those concerned in the establishment of communication between Shannon and Eketahuna, and in the construction of the bridge over the Manawatu river at Shannon Mr Vile to ask the Acting Minister for Public Works, If he will, this session, provide place on the publicworks estimates for a sum of money equal to £i tor £i provided by the local bodies interested to construct that most necessary work—namely, the erection of a traffic-bridge over the Manawatu River at Shannon ? (Note.—This work is a pressing one, and I trust the Government will consider favourably the frequent requests made by the settlers interested, and by myself and my predessors on their behalf, to grant this subsidy.) Reply.—The estimated cost of this bridge is £5,000, of which sum the local bodies ask the Government to
contribute £2,500. An application is now before the Roads Department lor ... the subsidy required, and it will receive consideration when the public- ? works estimates are being framed. Mr Vile to ask the Minister for Public Works, If it is his intention to pro. vide a sufficient sum of money on this year’s public-works estimates for the purpose of constructing a bridle-track between Shannon and Eketahuna ? Reply.—The matter of making provision for a bridle-track from Eketahuna to Shannon will be carefully considered in the compilation of the estimates. It may be stated, however, that the track would be expensive to construct and expensive to maintain.
