Marriage Statistics.
Daring last year 6748 marriages took place in the colony, an increase of 854 over the number for the previous year. Among men the greatest number (625) were married at the ages of 26 and 27. Years from 20 to 27 were admitted by the most brides, the record being :—2O to 21, 441; 21 to 22, 682 ;22 to 23, 717 ; 28 to 24, 669 ; 24 to 25, 609 ; 25 to 26, 524 ; 26 to 27, 488. After the age of 80, the proportion of men who married during the year fe’l rapidly. While 420 married at 80, only 847 did so a year later, 266 at 82, 268 at 83, and 206 at 34. Only 82 men married at 40—the age at which a man is usually a confirmed bachelor. Twenty-seven men between 65 and 70 entered the bonds of matrimony, and there were 26 bridegrooms of 70 years and over. A woman who remains single until she is thirty appears on the year’s figures to have passed “on to the shelf ” with but little hope of removal. While 422 women were married between 29 and 81. only 114 were between 81 and 82, and 100 between 82 and 83. There were 25 women married at the age of 40, and 19 were over 65.
