OLD BOYS y. WANDERERS.
These two teams met in a return match yesterday afternoon. "Before taking the field the Mayor (Mr G. Simpson), who was present on ground, spoke a few Words- to tnS players. He proposed that the teams play five matches, ahd ! to'the : wintimg team he would present a banner. For this kind and Sportsmanlike offer the Mayor wag given three ringings cheers. Following is a'brief account of the play:— v ' : Wanderers won the toss, and decided to defend the western goal. Webb (Old* Bdys) ;kicked forwards following up' sfattkrtty iidbidi. had the Wanderers busily defending in their 25, and after a hard tipe.-of. it they were awarded a free; kick. From the kick B. Cook neatly marked, but returning it too hard the Wanderers forced. After some loose play’ Old Boys were awarded a free kick for off side play,, but through kicking too hard the Wanderers again forced. Kicking out again they followed) up with determination and soon had the ball in their opponents’ territory, but not for long, as Cummerfield, J. Diinh/ Shadbolt and M. Cook started a fast dribbling rush, and carrying all betore them Cummerfield crossed the line addscored tor Old Boys.; Shadbolt was entrusted with the kick, but, failed jto convert. Old Boys 3—Wanderers, 0. On the ball being kicked out a lot of give and take play on both sides topk place. G. Dunn getting possessibn put in a fine kick for his side, and following up closely just missed scoring, the ball going in touch-in-goal. The whistle here sounded half-time. The second spell commenced with Wanderers kicking off, and after a lot ,of loose play the ball was taken into Wanderers’ 25. Here F. Walls saved his side with a nice kick, but wlnJcIT G. Dunn cleverly marked. Cook tdok the kick but failed to increase the score.' From the kick out the Wanderers again showed their determination, and soon had the Old Boys in a tight vorner, but Cook putting in a handy kick shifted play again into the Wanderers’ 25, and a little later they were forced. On the ball being kicked out play was very even, both sides putting in good work, but Furrie taking a
mark gave the Old Boys another •chance of scoring- B. Spelmau took the kick but failed, and thus the game <?nded—Old Boys 3—Wanderers o. Mr L. Furrie had charge of the whistle Tjftd refereed impartially. For the Old Boys J. Dunn, J. Webb, M. Cook and F. Whibley among the forwards, and G. Dunn, Shadbolt, B. Cook and Overend amongst the backs, played good games. The Wanderer forwards all played well, but among the backs L. Akdorf, B. Wilson and F, Walls shone out, the latter player especially playing a sterling game. THE SUPPER. At 6.30 in the evening both teams, also a number of guests, sat down to a substantial supper at Mr M. Perrean’s establishment. After the good things provided had been done full justice to, the evening was passed away in the form of a smoko concert. Speeches were made by the Mayor, Messrs Shadbolt, Furrie and G, Dunn and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close at 9.30.0’c10ck. BRITAIN v. SOUTHLAND AND OTAGO. The match, Britain v. Southland and Otago, resulted in a win lor the Britishers by 14 points to 8. The following will represent Awahou on Saturday s—Full back, C. Cummerfield ; J. Coley, F. Robinson, J. Louisson; five-eights, J. Prestling; half, W. Cook; wings, J. Joe, W. Robinson; forwards, Jeffries, Jillitt, Charles, S. and A. Wright, J. Lee, B. Brown. ' Emergs.—Back, G. Lees; torward, W. Coley. The first round of matches between the. Clubs competing for the Mayor’s banner concluded on Saturday, and the points scored by each team are as follows Kiwi 2, Huia 2, Awahou 2, Motuiti 0.
The second round will commence on Saturday, when Awahou meets Motuiti, and Kiwi meets Huia. The two former teams meet first, play to commence at 2 o’clock sharp. The Awahou and Kiwi teams should win their games. The members of the Old Boys’ team met on Tuesday evening in the Public Hall, and, under the tutorship of Mr L. Furrie, were instructed in some of the finer points of the game.
