THE DINNER.

Yesterday evening, after the match between the Wanderers and Old Boys had concluded, the rival teams aesemqled together at Mr Mark Perreau’s refreshment Booms, wherein excellent supper was provided at the expense of the losing team. Just as the boys began to “fall to,” the Mayor, Mr Simpson, put in an appearance, and was greeted with three hearty cheers. The spread- was ft goodly one, and much credit is due to Mr Perreau for the inimitable way in which he had prepared the supper. After the good things had been disposed of, Mr L. Furrie called on Mr Simpson to address the meeting, and drew attention to the keen interest Mr Simpson took ’ ih all matters relating to sport. Mr Simpson, in responding, thanked the meeting for their expressions of goodwill, and gave some excellent advice as to the manner in which football should be conducted. He stated that as Jong as he retained the Mayoralty, < He Would everything he could to advance ttitf interests of local foot- ' baiters*/' Mr Shadbolt complimented the boys oh the splendid form they had thus far shown, and trusted that , it .wpuld continue in the future. Messrs ■* ‘L. Alzdorf, G. Dunn, Frew and W. Barnard also delivered speeches, and after the toast of “The Union” had . been 'proposed by Mr Furrie and responded to by Mr Shadbolt, the assembly broke up by all standing and singing the national anthem. The function passed off very pleasantly, and we trust it will be only the forerunner of many others of a like nature.
