Last night Foxton was denuded of another of its buildings by that potent factor of destruction—fire. As is usual on such occasions the people gather idly round, watch the progress of the flames, and then begin to talk about the Water scheme. Alas, when will it come! The Mayor dangled this bunch of carrots before the nose of the electoral donkey (our language is figurative of course) when he solicited our votes at the late election, and to do him justice he has done his best to secure it for us. But the adverse mandate of the Councillors has gone forth, and Foxton' is to remain waterless adJinitunu The fire burns; the mighty waters of the Manawatu wend their way to the ocean scarce a hundred yards away; the rates increase by leaps and bounds j but the Water scheme, alas for our dreams, has now passed over to the limbo of “ the might have been.’*
