Outrage in Victoria.
DASTARDLY ATTACK ON WOMEN. A dastardly outrage has been committed at Footscray, a suburb of Melbourne. The family of Mr Shields, farmer, were roused early on Saturday morning by two loud explosions. It was discovered that someone unknown had broken the window of the room where Mr Shield’s wife slept, also the window of the room where the servant girl was sleeping, and thrown in lemonade bottles charged with blasting powder. The miscreant also fired a gun into the girl’s room, and marks of the shot were found on the wall. A tin canister containing two pounds and a half of powder with a fuse attached, was discovered outside the girl’s bedroom. Mrs Shields received painful injuries from the flying glass. The other members of the family were uninjured. A man named Maitland has been arrested for the bomb outrage. He had a grudge against the Shields owing to their using influence with a servant against him. .
