THE ATTACK ON THE TRANSPORTS.
The Japanese officials at Chifu fear the loss of the transports will delay the combined attack on Port Arthur. A report states that the cruisers Rossia arid Rurick surprised the transport Hitachimaru in a dense fog off Okinossima. They fired twenty-one shots at a range of 700 yards, wounding many; but finding the transport did not sink, they fired sixty shots at a range of 400 yards, causing the .boilers to explode, and setting fire to the ship. While he was burning the colours md official papers, a shell killed Colonel Suchi. Other officers and numerous oidiers suicided or jumped overboard. Finally, approaching to within 150 yards, the Russians fired shrapnel upon the crowded decks, sinking the ship and all on board. A shell beheaded the chief an Englishman, while standing" bn" the bridge, the body remaining upright. After being torpedoed, the Sadomaru was repeatedly hit by shells, the machinery being disabled.
