Foxton Borough Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held at the Library Buildings last night at 8 o’clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs Speirs, Gower, Baker, Stiles and Austin. The minutes were read and confirmed. The inward and outward correspondence was read. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Gower, That the clerk write to Mr McKenzie and tell him this Council will be pleased to meet the other local bodies re the matter of Levin-Greatford line in Foxton at noon on the 27th inst. Carried. Proposed oy Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Baker, That E. W. Mills’ tender for lamps be accepted to the number of sixteen. Carried. Proposed by Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr Baker, That the request of a few loads of metal leading from road as asked for by Mr Hennessy be granted, the foreman to attend to this matter. Carried. Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Austin, That in reference to Mr Frankland’s request to close streets, right-of-ways, that a copy of a resolution passed at a former meeting of the Council be forwarded to him in reference to the matter. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the Reserves Committee visit Victoria Park and see if Mr Gray has carried out the work according to contract. Carried. A deputation, consisting of the committee of the Foxton Athletic Club waited on the Council in reference to the proposed improvement to be made to the cycling track in Victoria Park, Mr A. D. Clemett, who spoke on behalf of the deputation, said the Club had an estimate made of the probable cost, and the Club were willing to give £3O towards the work being carried out, or the Club would be agreeable to donate £25 provided the Council subsidised to a like amount. The amount advanced by the Club would be considered a loan and could be repaid by the Council by way of a rebate each year of the amount charged to the Club for the use of the Park. After other members had spoken, the Mayor and Councillors favourably considered the deputation’s request that something should be done, and it was proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Baker, That the
Council is willing, provided the Cycling Club make the Council a donation of ,£3O, to grant them an additional £l4 as a subsidy for the completing of the cycling track. . An amendment was proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Or Gower, That the Council subsidise the Athletic Club to the amount of £ for £ up to £25. The amendment was carried, and the deputation, after thanking the Council, withdrew. The accounts and usual reports were read.
Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Or Gower, That this Council by virtue of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900 and amendments, the Rating Act, 1894 and amendments, and the Public Libraries’ Act, do now strike a general fate of fifteen pence in the £, and a Library rate of one penny in the £ on the annual rental value of the Whole of the rateable properties within the Borough for the period commencing on the Ist April, 1904, and terminating on the 31st March, 1905, to be due and payable in one sum at tb.eCCouncil office on the Ist day of July, 1904. Carried. Proposed by Or Austin, seconded by Cr Baker, That the Mayor, and Crs Gower and Stiles sign the ratebook Carried i Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Baker, That the accounts as read be passed for payment, and the reports aS i*ead be adopted. Carried. Cr Speirs having; retired front the meeting, and in consequence there not being a quorum, the Council adjourned until Friday next, at 7.80 p.m, __ Messrs Leary and Dixoa, the Square, Palmerston North, desire' to thank the residents of Edxfcon and surrounding district for their liberal patronage In thepis*, and to inform them that their warehouse holds a magnificent stock of pianos; or-, gang, and musical instl'uiUents of every description', also Wertheim and Wheeler and Wilson’s sewing machines, and Sellar’s celebrated washing machines, etc. Most of the piano, are of English manufacture. whilst the Bsley make of organ is well-known throughout the world for its excellence of tone aud durability. The wonderful Wertheim sewing machines continu to grow in favor, whilst Sellar’s ce'eorated washing macEinea give every satisfaction, and make the dreaded washing day a thing of the past.
