Wholesale License for Rongotea.
An application was made by A. G. Hickford for a wholesale license at Rongotea, about eighteen miles west of Palmerston. Mr Gifford Moore, Palmerston, appeared lor application, and Mr A. R. Atkinson, Wellington, opposed it. The district, which is reEuted to be a strong prohibition centre, as never had a licensed house of any description. An extensively signed petition from residents against the application was put in. Numerous witnesses were called on both sides. The hearing occupied the whole of the afternoon. The application was granted, a bare majority of the committee—Messrs O’Connor, Coughlin and Mcßeth—voting in the affirmative, and the chairman and Mr Simpson in the negative.
