What the War is Costing Russia.

A despatch to the Paris Temps from St, Petersburg says the cost of the war up to sth April in all branches of the service is officially estimated at £9,250,000. The cost by June will reach £20,000,000. The allotment for June is £3,000,000 for the army and £1,000,000 for the navy. The Trans-Siberian railway, the despatch adds, will show a deficiency of £4,500,000 for the year. If the war lasts eighteen months it is estimated that the total cost will be £80,000,000. The Government, it is further asserted, could meet all its requirements by having recourse to its gold reserve, but this is considered undesirable, politically and financially. An increase of the duties also is not desired, as it would add to the burden of the people. Therefore, if the need arises, the Government will have recourse to short-term loans.

Messrs Leary and Dixon, the Square, Palmerston North, desire to thank the residents of Foxton and surrounding district for their liberal patronage in the past, and to inform them that their warehouse holds a magnificent stock of pianos, organs, and musical instruments of every description, also Wertheim and Wheeler and Wilson’s sewing machines, and Sellar’s celebrated washing machines, etc. Most of the pianos are of English manufacture. whilst the Esdey make of organ is well-known throughout the world for its excellence of tone and durability. The wonderful Wertheim sewing machines continu to grow in favor, whilst Sellar’s ca'ebrated washing macEines give every satisfaction, and make the dreaded washing day a thing of the past. A cordial invitation is extended to ah residents when paying a visit to Palmerston North to call at Messrs Leaby & Dixon’s, The House of Music, The Square.—Auto.
