A Scow Ashore.

News was sent to town yesterday morning by Mr J. Hall, the pilot at the Manawatu Heads that the scow Magic had been blown ashore near the mouth of the Manawatu River. The Magic was bound from Puponga to Wellington with a cargo of coal, and was under the command of her owner, Captain Eckford. The scow had been sheltering under Kapiti, the captain of the Huia haring sighted her there on Saturday afternoon. Captain Eckford had decided owing to the delay to try and get into the Foxton port, and when nearing the bar yesterday morning a terrific storm with rain came on, which completely obscured the signals from- the pilot station. The result was disastrous, as the vessel shortly grounded on the North Spit. It is not expected the vessel will receive any serious damage, as the beach on which she lies is of a sandy nature. In the meantime the cargo of go tons is being jettisoned, and an attempt will be made when the gale drops to get the vessel off.
