Foxton Literary and Debating Society.

- - - • The usual weekly meeting of the above Society took place at Mr Stewart’s residence last night, the subject for discussion being “ Socialism.” Mr Barnard advocated the cause of Socialism, while Mr Harris opposed it. After the matter had been fully debated, the following

questions were put to the meeting ; (1) Is Socialism desirable? (2) Is Socialism practicable? The memberdMccided in favour of the former motion by a two-third’s majority, while the latter was negatived, only one-third of those present voting in the affirmative. Besides the leaders the following members took part in the discussion:—Messrs Hutc uson, Hunter, Jenks and Moore. Mr Moore acted ns Chairman for the evening. The next meeting of the Society will take place on Friday week, when reports on subjects of general interest will be delivered.
