The Te Awaite Murder.
The Christchurch as follows in reference to the above •-— * “ The murder was one of the most diabolical and cold-blooded crimes ever perpetrated, and the murderer had 24 hours’ start. But, instead of hustling round and offering a large reward at once, and scattering his description broadcast the Police Department determined that this was the moment to practise economy and give the force open-air exercise. It despatched a number of neat, regulation, parade-ground constables into the primeval forest to whistle for Ellis, and was very dismayed when the dirty, dilapidated remnants came straggling back without so much as a clue. Now that a sufficient number of weeks has elapsed, the Department has concluded that, as it can’t catch Ellis itself, and there isn’t any chance of anybody else catching him, it may safely offer a reward—the princely sum of £IOO. Meanwhile, unless Ellis is a fool, as well as a murderer, he probably reached South Africa about two months ago.”
