Manawatu County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Wednesday. Present—Crs Wilson (chairman), Kendall, Masters, F, Robinson, Claris and Clarke. CORRESPONDENCE. From tbe Rongotea branch of the Farmers’ Union asking the Council to consider the practicability of extending the tram to Rongotea, and pointing out the many advantages that would accrue in their opinion. From the Kairanga County Couneil, forwarding account £209 2s 7d on account of the Awahuri Bridge ’iforks.—Payment deferred. From Dr Valentine, forwarding copy of the Public Health Act, and pointing out the benefits likely to occur from the. proposed drainage at Bongotea. From the Railway Department, stating the Inspector had reported favourably on the state of the tram line, though there was still a lot of wor)c to be done in the v' A j of aurlining and re^ ew i n g sleepers. The extension trom Sandon to the Rangitikei river also needed attention. REPORT. The tramway manager reported the credit balance for the month’s work was £122 2s 7d. During the month 110 tons of gram had been carried, 75 tons of merchandise, 69 tons of minerals, 52J tons of hemp, 23,500 ft of timber, and 369 trucks of metal. The Clerk reported that a total of £55 2s lOd had been received for the storage of grain in the granary, which with the amount owing, £26 13s, gave total receipts of £Bl 15s lOd. The expenditure totalled £26 12s 7d, leaving a credit balance of £55 3s 3d. It was suggested the floor of the granary should be concretsd. The engineer reported upon the state of the roads in the district; also, the work in hand, and that completed during the month. Generally the roads were stated to be in fair order. MISCELLANEOUS. Tenders were accepted for the following contracts as under ;—Kari Kari drain road, J. Hocking, 26s per chain; contract 179, Jones Line, W. R. Anderson, 29s 6d per chain; contract 180, McLennan’s Line, J. Mathers, £3B 10s. It was decided to utilise £3O of the credit balance of £55 3s 3d, on the granary account, in putting down a concrete floor in the granary and to grant a bonus of £lO to the Clerk, Mr Purnell, from the remainder. Mr Hiokford, the new overseer, received official intimation of his appointment vice Mr Mitchell, resigned. D. Weston was appointed roadman in Mr Hiakford’s place. It was resolved to place 220 yards of metal on Taylor’s Line and, also, to inform Messrs Walker and Nolan that unless their contract for Girst’a Line is completed in accordance with specifications by the 20th inst., the Council will take the contract out of their hands and complete it at their coat. Ordinary accounts were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
