Te Awaite Tragedy.

ALLEGED MURDERER ARRESTED. A man, reported to he Ellis, who is wanted in connection with the Te Avvaite tragedy, was arrested at Urenui on Saturday by the Waitara police. ACCUSED DENIES HE IS ELLIS. The man who is supposed to be Ellis, the Te Awaits murderer, was arrested by Constable Beattie on a farm where he was employed digging potatqes. He denies that he is Ellis, but says he knows Ellis well. The constable acted on information given him by a commercial traveller, who saw accused in one of the Waitara hotels.

The man arrested was brought before Mr Cameron, J.P., at Waitara on Monday morning, and remanded to New Plymouth for seven days, with the proviso that he may be brought before the Court at any time during that period. Detective Kuirke and Constable Beattie arrested him at the house of Mr Peter Black. He gives his name as David Watt and says he worked as chainman on a survey party in the Wairarapa where he knew Ellis, in height, appearance and general build he resembled Ellis as /Ic-s----cribed in the police records. He is now lodged in New Plymouth gaol. Witnesses are expected from the Wairarapa for the purpose of identifying the man arrested.
