The Sydney Tragedy.
At the inquest on Thompson, which was adjourned from Tuesday, evidence was given to show that deceased was much given to the use of and was well acquainted with firearms. On the day of his death, several times he was seen handling a new type of pistol, wherein he stated a cartridge had jammed. He was entering his own room from the clerk’s with a pistol in his hand when the fatal shot was fired. The medical- testimony was not conclusive. The balance favoured suicide in view of the position of the wound and Thompson’s expert. knowledge of firearms. Other evidence dealt with his financial position and the insurances. A large portion of the latter will be voided in tne event of suicide. Altogether Thompson was insured for £3OOO in the New Zealand Accident Insurance Co., a policy for £2OOO dating from last month. Several other heavy policies were in operation from one to four months.
