Levin-Foxton Road.

At a meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday a letter was received from 0. F. Johnston, who was also in attendance, stating that several culverts on the LevinFoxton road were completely rotten, and the road in a very bad state. Or Wilson pointed out that Mr McDonald had been paying rates for 25 years, and had absolutely nothing done to this road. In common justice the Council should put the road in order out of the general fund. Cr Prouse was prepared to support the road being repaired, Mr Johnston thought that a couple of men could repair the worst places on the road in about three we-ks. He passed over the road every day, and could say that the roadman had only spent one half-day on the road during the past three months. The Chairman said this part of the district was not paying for a single special loan, and was the only piece of road in the district not being so rated. If the Levin people wanted to make the road a good one, they should have voted for the special loan, a poll for which had been lost, and not expect the Council to spend their general rate. He pointed out that only recently £l5O had been spent on the road. He would agree to £2O being spent in repairs, but no more. Cr McDonald said he paid £IOO per year for rates, yet could not get anything done to the road. The Council had not spent one farthing on his road for ten years, though he had paid rates on 5000 acres since the county was in existence. Next year he would be paying £SOO for rates, and receiving very little benefit. Cr Wilson said the Chairman was in error in saying the settlers in this part of the district were paying no special rates. They were rated for a £GOOO loan. It was then resolved, on the motion of Cr Wilson, seconded by Cr Macdonald, That the absolutely necessary works be taken in hand at once on the Levin-Foxton road, up to £2O.
