Ruffianism in Auckland.
BOBBERY WITH VIOLENCE. Further evidence of the presence of undesirable characters in Auckland was furnished by two recent cases of garrotting. In the first instance a farmer was walking up Wellesley-street when he was set upon by a couple of men who assaulted and robbed him. The latest victim of the garrotte is Thomas Gresham, City Coroner, who was returning home on Saturday night and who was set upon opposite the Supreme Court, He was clutched by the throat from behind, and a bag containing a Masonic apron and jewels was wrenched from his hand. Thinking it might be some Masonic friends having a Joke, Gresham offered no resistance till a naan whipped round from behind and began tugging at his watch chain. He then seized the man who was holding him by the throat and shook himself free. One of them cried, “Make haste,” and then both robbers made off with Gresham’s Masonic insignia and gold chain, leaving the gold watch and a sovereign case in his pocket His mackintosh was torn and the violence of the clutch on the throat burst Gresham’s collar.
