Social and Concert.
The concert and social in aid of the funds of the Foxton Presbyterian Church was given in the Public Hall on Wednesday night, and was a success in every way. There was a good attendance, and the ladies had the stage nicely arranged for the performers, and also provided an excellent supper for all. The Rev, W. Finlayson (Levin), Rev. J. Doull (Bulls), Rev. W. Harris and Mr Hutchison (Foxton) gave appropriate addresses during the evening. The following programme was creditably rendered:—Overture, “ Lucrezia Borgia,” Mrs J. Symons (piano) Misses A. and E. Symons and H. Cook (violins), and Mr T. Betty (euphonium); solo, “ The Toilers,” Mrs J. Hunter; glee, “Three Doughty Men,” Mesdames Symons, Cook, Barnard, Rodieand MissCo’ok, and Messrs Barber, Betty and Cook; recitation, “ Vilest Friend of All,” Mr Marshall; song, “ Serenade and Summer,” Miss Haywood, encore “ I Was Dreaming;” song, “True Till Death,” Mr Keys; song, " Sweet Home,” Miss Frances Simpson; glee, “The Bells of St. Michael’s Tower.” The second part opened with another instrumental piece entitled “ Fairest of the Fair,” by the same performers who took part in the first overture. The audience demanded a repetition; song, “ Island of Dreams,” Mrs Currie (encore) ; song, “May Be,” Miss N. Laing (encore); song, “ The Bridge," Master J. Currie (encore); euphonium solo, “The Village Blacksmith,” Mr Betty; song, “Love’s Serenade,” Miss Withers; song, “ Won’t You Come to my Tea parly,” Miss Lizzie Laing (encore); glee, “ Good-night, Beloved.” The accompaniments during the evening were nicely played by Mesdames Symons and Cook, and Misses Furrie, M. Laing, M. Withers, and Haywood. A profit of over £ll is likely to be the result ot the entertainment, which must be considered most satisfactory.
