Death of a Nurse.

Miss Emily Mary Hard on, a trained nurse, twenty-nine years of age, who occupied a room above Mr Hobson’s, chemist, 215, Willis-st., Wellington, was found unconscious in bed early on Monday morning, and died the same evening in the hospital, under circumstances which point at present to asphyxiation. Deceased left instructions on Sunday night to be awakened at 8 a.rn. next day, but failed to answer when called at the appointed hour. There was no reply in response to a second call two hours later, and at 11 o'clock it was thought advisable to break open the door. Miss Mardon was discovered lying in bed in an unconscious state ; the gas-jet was turned full on, but not lighted, and the place was simply filled with fumes. Efforts were made to secure the attendance of a medical man, but it was two hours later before Dr Elliott was telephoned for* and he arrived five minutes after the receipt of the message. Subsequently the young woman was removed to the hospital, where she died at 8 o’clock the same evening. The window in deceased’s room was found to boMosed when an entrance was gained, and there was little or no ventilation.
