The Wellington Mayoralty.
Mr J. G. W. Aitken, forwarded on Friday to Mr J. P. Luke his reply to the representations of the deputation which asked him on the previous day to agree to be nominated for another year of office as Mayor of the city. Mr Aitken has declined the request. His letter to Mr Luke, the spokesman of the deputation, is as‘follows : - The Mayor’s, office, Wellington, March 18th, 1904. Dear Sir, In 4gMMiance with the promise I made and to the which waited on me yesterday in reference to allowing myself to be nominated for another year as Mayor : I regret exceedingly to say that I cannot see my way to accede to the request. I appreciate fully all that was said, and it coats me much regret to de-
| cline. I feel it is my duty, in the interests of the city. 1 feel sure that I have &t>t sufficient strength to continue at the high pressure I have been going at in the past. Thanking you and the deputation for your kindness, I have, etc., J. G. W, Aitken.
Mr T. M. Wilford, M.H.R., has received communications from the suburbs of Kilbirnie, Broklyn, NeWtovvn and Mitchelltown, as Well as from several business men in the city, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the Mayoralty. Mr Wilford, who has been laid up for a couple of weeks, owing to a cab accident, replied that he could give no decided answer, but would consider the matter.
