Scene at a Country Show.
It is stated that quite a sensation was caused on the 11th inst., at the Towai Show (Whangarei district), when a settler named Johnston, who had had some trouble with Constable Cahill (stationed at Hikurangi), suddenly ran at the constable and made a furious blow at bis face. This was guarded off by the constable in a clever manner, and he in return dealt his assailant a heavy blow under the chin. Johnston was knocked over, and the constable then attempted to secure him. Johnston, however, is a very powerful and active man, and the constable who is also a very powerful man, had great difficulty in putting on the handcuffs. While so engaged another man, named Surrah, fiercely attacked the constable, getting him by the throat, which he tore badly. The constable finally succeeded in handcuffing Johnston, and he then turned his attention to his second assailant, whom he knocked down and handcuffed all by himself. While so engaged, Johnston managed to get up, and he ran off, handcuffed as he was. He is still at large, with the handcuffs on, unless they have been taken off by someone. The other prisoner taken into Whangarei and lodged in the cells. Constable Cahill was all alone at the Towai Show, the Whangarei constable being in Auckland, while the Kawakawa constable was engaged with two prisoners and could not get there, as had been arranged,
