Whafc was pronouncsd to have been the greatest treat amd day’s outing that the children of Foxtou have ever had took place on Thursday, when the above club held its first meeting on the Victoria Park. Not only did the gathering afford amusement and recreation for the children, but the elder people were well catered for, as there were no less than nine open events on the programme. Perfect weather prevailed all day, and the attendance was good considering the counter attraction - the Levin races. Refreshments were handed round at 1 and 3 oclock, and still there was plenty of nice things over. Apple, lollie, and biscuit scrambles were also provided at intervals during the afternoon, and it was a sight worth seeing to watch how heartily the little ones indulged in these. The officials all worked hard to make the meeting a success, and it is no doubt very gratifying to them to see how their efforts were rewarded, and that there will be a balance on the pleasant side of the ledger. The handicapping was very good for the adult races, consequently exciting flushes wergjtbe order of the day with tfPone exception—the One Mile Bike race-when Withers, who gives promise of developing into a good rider, won with ridiculous ease. Unfortunately there were three spills during the day, but neither riders or machines suffered any material damage, as was evi(Uictd by the fact that both Dunn
I and Marshall, two of the unfortunates, came out later in the day and I won a race each. The proceedings commenced at 11 o’clock, and were kept going till 6 o’clock, when everybody went home having spent a very enjoyable day. It is intended to make the sport# an annual afiair. Last evening the children’! dance was held, and between 150 and 200 children attended, all gaily, y et becomingly, dressed. Judging by their exhibition of lung power and ehildish glee, they all had a happy time. Supper was handed round by many willing hands, and all the younger ones retired to their respective homes at 10.45 p.m. thoroughly dead beat. Mrs F. Walls kindly supplied the music gratis. Previous to the supper adjournment, Mr R. Noonan, in a few well-chosen words, thanked all those, on behalf of the committee, who had assisted in any way in making the sports and dance the huge success they undoubtedly had been.
