Man Murdered Near Martinborough.
SHOT BY AN UNSEEN HAND. ON A LONELY BUSH TRACK. New has been received that a man named Collinson, employed as a bush feller at Te Awaite station, thirty miles from Martinborough, was shot dead on a bush track near the station by an unseen hand while in company with his mate. Additional particulars of the tragedy at Te Awaite station show that Collinson and Ross were working in a cutting,
Boss first heard the rifle, and on looking up saw son rolling down the hill. ■ Ross made an effort to trace the person who fired the shot, but WW unsuccessful. . Oollinson was shot through the heart. The inquest is proceeding. The man the police are in search of is suspected of arson in connection with the destruction of a woolshed in the neighbourhood. He has been dismissed from several stations, and is known to have threatened the life of Bunny, the manager of Riddiford’a station, also deceased and others. It is supposed he was in search of Bunny when he met the deceased. BiKpny had gone out to show Efome bushmen a felling contract. He was met by a station band and returned by, another route, otherwise he might have met the same fate as Oollinson. The man suspected of the murder has lived a nomadic life in the wild bush country, and is an experienced bushman. The police are now searching for him, but it is considered that he will never be taken alive. The country is extremely wild, and bushmen who know it will be required to capture him or render aid to the police. Oollinson was a remittance man of about thirty years of age, and is stated to have been secretary at one time to Sir William Vernon Harcourt. He came to the colony about four years ago. His father is a Wellknown solicitor in London, and he has a brother in Christchurch. Neither Oollinson nor Bum bad firearms. The scene of the murder is a wild spot, eleven miles from Te Awaite station. The body was carried for three miles on a pack-saddle before the main road was reached.
