Treatment of Pupil-teachers.
Some observations were made by Mr Hogg, M.H.R., at the meeting of the Wellington Education Board, in condemnation of the present system of dealing with pupil-teachers who have passed their examinations and qualified for promotion. Young women had to work hard, he said, for their examinations, and when these were passed, and they had qualified themselves to become teachers, they were discharged in order that the Department might save a few miserable pounds. iVlany of these women were in poor circumstances, and these were discharged, not because there was no room for their abilities, but in order to make room for other young teachers. He denounced such a i system, Baying that parents ought to be warned that in putting their daughters to this work they were simply ruining their chances in life. On the motion of Messrs Hogg and Field, a resolution was passed as follows : - “ The Board is of that the dismissal of pupil-t^ ac her« f who have Vttftir examinations an< t qualified for promotion should be avoided by their continuance in employment as ex-pupil-teachers, until such time as they are afforded an opportunity of filling other positions ; that where the service is terminated at the end qf the year, they should be paid for the time occupied by the usual Christmas and New Year holidiays ; and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Minister for Education.”
