The Otaki Assault Case.

IMPRISONMENT FOR LIFE.

James Guilford was charged at the Wellington Supreme Court criminal sittings on Thursday with carnally knowing a girl under ten years of age at Otald on September 26th. The evidence showed that the girl had been horribly ill-used. The jury found accused guilty after a few minutes’ retirement, and the Chief Justice sentenced him to imprisonment for life. His Honor Baid that after hearing the medical evidence he considered it was not Safe to allow prisoner at large. He would not order any flogging, as the man was suffering from nervous collapse, otherwise he would have done so. Prisoner is about twcutyseven years of age.
