Precautions Against Fire.
Some excitement has been caused amongst the lessees of places of entertainment in Wellington just now owing to the action of the City Council following on the Chicago theatre fire and disaster. The Opera House Company has received instructions from the Mayor to make further provision in the way of exits, and the company are as strongly objecting to carry out what it considers an unnecessary and costly work. His Majesty’s Theatre is to have some alterations made. The greatest surprise, however, is that received by Mr P. R. Dix, of the Theatre Royal, whose license ran out a fortnight ago and a renewal has been withhold. Mr Dix, however, goes on using the house despite the intimation received from the Corporation that he -is playing in unlicensed premises, The City Council has decided to proceed against Mr Dix in the Magistrate’s Court for having used a public place without a license. Mr Dix intimates that he intends fighting the question.
