Foxton Borough Council.

A special meeting of the above was held last night at 7.30 o’clock. Present—Hia Worship the Mayor, and Crs J. Symons, A. Speirs, B, dower, 0. Austin, J. P. Overend, B. Spelman, G. Stiles, G. Coley and S. H. Baker; Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded hy Cr Baker, That this Council hereby makes a special order in accordance with the powers conferred upon by the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, declaring that blackberry, sweetbriar, Californian thistle, gorse, broom, ragwort, lupin, Bathurst burr, giant burdock, are noxious weeds within the Borough of Foxton, and that a special meeting be held on Monday, 15th February, 1904, to confirm this order. After consideration the motion Was put and lost, as follows Ayes; Ora Gower, Baker, Stiles and Symons. Noes: The Mayor, Crs Speirs, Coley, Overend, Austin and Spelman. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Or Symons, That the weekly half-holiday in the Borough of Foxton be observed on Wednesday during the year 1904. Carried. The ordinary monthly meeting was then held. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Or Austin, That the Railway Department be asked to pay the 20s expenses incurred by the Fire Inspector putting out the fire on the wharf when the wharf was in danger. Carried. An application was road from the Town Clerk asking for an increase of salary. The Council went into committee and the following motions were proposed in regard to the question - Proposed by Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Spehaan, That the Council cannot see their way clear at the present time to increase the Town Clerk's salary. An amendment was proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by the Mayor pro forma, That the Town Clerk’s salary be from the first of April at the rate of £l2O per year, terminable with one month’s notice on either side, and that all duties at present performed by him be included in his duties, also that he take charge of all workmen and that he prepare all work before hand, also that he attend in the office five days in the week frwTO p.m. to 5 p m. amendment, proposed by Cr Symons, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the clerk’s request for an increase of salary be granted, and that he be'paid HIOO per year from the Ist April, providing he continues to act as Inspector of Buildings for the above salary. This amendment, which became the original motion, was carried. The Council resumed its ordinary sitting, and the correspondence, reports, and accounts were read. The sexton of the Foxton cemetery (Mr A. Jonson), waited on the Council, and pointed out the bad state of the fencing. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, That Mr W. Gray be informed that the Council are willing to do half of the fencing as suggested by him on the Cemetery Reserve to Mr A. Jonson, caretaker. Carried. Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Coley, That a committee, consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Stiles, Symons, Coley, and the mover, be ; appointed to confer with the Inspector of Fires as to what is required as applied for by him, the above committee to have power to order what is required. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded

by Cr Baker, That the reports as , read be adopted, and that accounts as* read be passed for payment. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Coley, That the Foxton School Committee be allowed the use of the Council Chambers for its meetings. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Baker, That the Mayor arrange with Mr Wilson which half of the cemetery fence he will repair and maintain, and then get the balance repaired. Carried. Proposed by Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Spelman, That the tender of Mr Shapleski at ,£698 10s for forming, gravelling and claying of No. 1 Line be accepted. Carried. An amendment, proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, pro forma, That the tendsr of Mr Cooksley, for doing No. 1 Line, be accepted for £698, was not carried.
