Melbourne, September 12 A fire, which quickly assumed alarming proportions, occurred on the steamer Pilbarra last night. 'The outbreak was apparently due to the sp mtaneous combustion of a quantity of nitre in the forehold. The flames spread so rapidly that a pantryman named White was imprisoned, and was only rescued through a hold cut in the upper deck just as the flames scorched his back.
The fire subsided almost as rapidly as it began. The cargo in No. X bole was practically burnt out. The amount of damage is unknown.
