Destructive Fire at Taihape.
LOSS OP LIFE.
A telegram to the Post from Taihape says that two boarding-houses ware completely destroyed by fire, at that township during the last few days. On Friday night MoCrewley’s accommodation house of twenty-two rooms caught fire and was burnt in an hour.
On Tuesday morning about 1 o’clock Mrs Batt’s boarding-house took fire with fatal results. A married couple were sleeping in a front room, and evidently did not detect the fire until it was upon them.
The woman, a daughter of Mrs Silk, perished in the flames, while a man named Mitflhell was badly burned and also lacerated in smashing the window to escape. Mr R. J. McDonald was also badly burned before he got out through a window.
The proprietress narrowly escaped in her nightdress. The building is a total wreck. The charred remains of the woman were found by the sitting-room fireplace, and it is thought she ran to the sitting-room from the bedroom and was suffocated.
A Maori named Te Bonga was also badly burned. He and Mitchell yrere taken to the Wanganui Hospital.
