A Missing Man.
ACTING HEADMASTER WANGANUI COLLEGIATE SCHOOL.
OftasTOHUBOH, ■ September 6. A painful sensation 'Was caused in scholastic circles yesterday by the spread of a rumor that; the Rev. J. M. Marshall, of the- Wanganui Collegiate School, a well-known cricketer, was missing. Marshall had been for some years chaplain and first assistant master, .and was recently appointed Citing-headmaster during the absence of Mr Empson, He came to Christchurch ten days ago to meet the W & School football team for the ahnual matches with Christ's College and Wellington College, It has been Marshall's custom in past years; to travel with the team, bnt this year he was in Dunedin when thn team left. A few months ago be suffered from an attack ef rheumatic fevCr,; Ond a holiday being neoessitated hy the state of his health, MarihaUeaiUe to Christchurch as the guest of the Rev. Cooks, vicar of Opawa, kit old fellow student. Hie friend* pbtjoed that bis health and spirits *erc not so good as usual. On Wednesday morning Marshall ate a good bmakfait, and about half-part nine strolled into the vicarage grounds. A mCkber of the family saw him go out of the house and supposed he was going out foe a walk. At lunch time he had not reappeared but was expected to return to the vicarage during the afternoon, but there was no sign of him, and all inquiries were of ho avail. Most members of the Wanganui football team left Lyttelton, for Wellington by the Mararoa on Wednesday evening, but Marshall did obb accompany them. His friends became very anxious and the police itlte informed on Thursday, and yesterday search partial were out on the hills and the river was scoured. Enquiries were made wherever the , missing gentleman might have been, but no word could he obtained, and his disappearance was complete. A representative of the Times who travelled to Wellington by the Mararoa telegraphed last night; “Marshall was said to have been booked by the Mararoa. Hia name appears on the passenger list, but though I know him well I did not see him on hoard."
