Old Age Pensions.
A WARNING TO OLD PEOPLE.
An interesting case was before the Invercargill Court on Wednesday last, when Roderick McLeod and his wife were charged-with making false statements whereby they obtained larger-pensions than they wore entitled to. When the pensions were granted in 1800 neither disclosed the possession of property. Subsequently they bought land, but said the money was their sons’, for Whom they held it in trust. The Magistrate held this was not established, and ordered both certificates to be cancelled, each to pay £lB, amount of the pension overdrawn, and debarred for twelve months from applying. His Worship added that no good purpose Would he served by imprisoning them.
The new system adopted by the Registrar of Pensions has led to a large number of pensions being withdrawn, more care being now exercised in the claimants and others than before. Every effort is being made to ensure that only those persons whose position fulfils all requirements of the Act should receive the pension.
