Drowning Accident.
Information was conveyed to Sergeant Stagpoole at Palmerstoo on Sunday, by Mr Hugh Akers, of Riverdale, that a man named Thomas Hill, a station hand employed at Riverdale, had been drowned near Hickson and Reeves* flax'mill.
It appears deceased and another employee at the station went to remove cattle from some low-lying land, which it was expected the river would inundate. A lagoon, a portion of the river, had to be crossed, and, in the absence of the boat usually at the place it was necessary to swim. Hill’s mate got across without accident, but Hill was washed oft his horse when making his attempt and Immediate search wtf or the body, but without sucoeSß«T Yesterday, however,. Forster went out and with the nelp of others was successful in finding the body. u The lagoon ia locally known as the Opui and is eleven miles from Shannon. It is reported deceased has relatives at Otaki and Masterttm, and a few months back was working in Foxton as a blacksmith.
An inquest was held to-day at the Courthouse by Mr Alf. Fraser, acting-Coroner.
