Alleged Cruelty.
In the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning Charles and Alice Hankins were charged on remand with wilfully neglecting the child Charles Leonard Leaman, in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering. ’ The evidence given accorded with the statements of the Sub-Inspector of Police when the case was previously before the Court An attempt was made by counsel for the defence to show in cross-examination that the child was put in an outhouse to sleep because of his dirty habits. The matron of the Samaritan Horae, where the child had been for the last seven days, stated that he had not exhibited dirty habits. Photographs were put in showing the inflamed state of the boy’s feet from aggravated chilblains when he was found by the police and medical evidence was called on the same point. The child stated that he was not ill-treated except for being put in the outhouse on cold, frosty nights.
Accused reserved their defence and were committed for trial. Bail was allowed, in each case the amount being fixed at £SO, and two sureties of £25 each. The police will apply to have the child committed to an Industrial Home,
