At Christchurch on August Bth, Charles and Alice Hankins were charged at the Magistrate's Court, with wilfully neglecting a aeveh-year-old child in their custody, amid Charles Leaman. Sub-Inspector Dwyer Stated the child had been found by the police sleeping, _on a bitterly cold night,, in an oUthoasa belonging to the accused at St. Martin. The boy was an illegitimate child of Mrs Hankins, and -when found in the outhouse was covered with some Bax and three dirty corn sacks. He had no singlet On, while his shirt was all torn. His feet were swollen with chilblains.'''He had for a pillow two bricks a’ad was stiff with cold when found. , boy had slept there for a fortnight. The mother had told the constable she was tired of the child fewr it would be a good job if be were 1 dead. Instructions have been given to lay an information as for an indictable offence.
