HEAVY FINES FOR DRINKSELLING. At Invercargill on Tuesday last Charles Humphries, of the; Fortrose Hotel, situated in the Mataura electorate, was fined £SO and costa for sly grog selling. The Magistrate (Mr M’Carthy) said it was not necessary that money actually passed or ths» liquor was consumed, if the Court was satisfied that a transaction in the nature of a sale took place. He entirely disbelieved the evidence ; of defendant and his four witnesses that the liquor was a gift. AlUiquors were ordered to be seized and the vessels forfeited. In future case of sly grog selling in a prohibited district, unless in very special' hdsres, the Magistrate added, imprisonment would.be imposed on a first offence. Four men who were in the bar drinking when the police entered were fined £2 each for illegally dealing in liquor.
