Confession of an Incediarist.
A sensation was caused at. Stratford on Tuesday when Isaac John Salmon was brought before the Court on a charge that on or about Atmgjst 26, 1901, he Wilfully set building in Broadway, Stratford, the premises being iif the occupation of Thomas and Susan Hitchcock. Constable Ryan gave evidence that at 9 o’clock that morning, while standing on the railway platform, accused, handed him a written confession that he had set fire to the shop and contents on the promise of reward. Witness arrested Salmon, and his confession was repeated in the presence of Constable Bleasel. The case was adjourned till 2 o’clock. The accused was then again brought before the Court, and was defended by counsel, Mr Spence. Counsel asked for a remand till next week, and the request was granted, on bail of two sureties of £2OO each. The case will be further dealt with on August 4. Salmon was formerly a representative cricketer in Wellington.
