The Chief Justice.
Commenting on the possible retirement of the Chief Justice, the Napier Telegraph says;—“ Will Sir Robert Stout re-enter politics? If he ceases to be Chief Justice we may bo sure that his force of character and bis deep political convictions will bring him to the legislative van once more. Whether bo obtains compensation or not we hops for the |ond of the country that he will resign his position as Chief Justice and get back into politics. Bir Robert Stout is too good a man to be Chief Justice when he might be shaping the destinies of the colony. We do not say he is too good to be .on the Bench. That can be said of no man. But, he being the kind of man he is, with his profoundest convictions and his deepest sympathies wedded to the political experiences of the colony, he might prove of greater service to the people by sharing in their political struggles than by remaining on the Bench. Hence, if the precedence question leads to his re-entry into political life, New Zealand may be the gainer.”
