The Accident in the Gorge.
The derailing of the train in ih« Gorge on Thursday night was more nearly attended with Very ssrions, possibly fatal, results than is generally known. A gentleman who was in the train states that the space between the engine wheels*and the edge of the embankment wm not more than from six to eight inches. Down the bank was a sheer drop of 100 feet to the river. Undoubtedly, it was only the presence of mind of the driver, bis prompt application of the.- brakes and the effectiveness of the latter, which prevented, a catastrophe/ The. passengers were not aware ,of what had happened for some few minutes, hut when they examined the position of. the .engine they realised the narrowness ol their escape.—Times.
