Wife Desertion.
At the Palmerston jd.M. Coart yesterday* George Martinet plsaded not guilty to a charge of deserting his wife at Foxton, and Mr Hankins appeared. for 'M- O’Riley, father of the complainant. The latter in his evidence said accused left his home on May Bth and had not been home since. Accused had led people expect he was going to ' commit" suicide. He told some of his mates he would be missing in a day or two, consequently, when he did disappear, preparations were made to form a search party and * also to drag the river. However, it was ascertained accused was in Palmerston and witness saw him there but was unable to persuade him to return. His'wife was in delicate health and had not received any money from accused. The latter in his evidence said; ha had left Foxton because “things were not too good with him and he wished to- get away in order to let them quieten down a bit.” Ha was quite willing to support his wife. An order was made for the payment ©f 16s per weak.
