Foxton Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the above was held last night at 7.30 o’clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Cr T. Westwood), and Cra B 1 6. Gower, G, Coley, G. Stiles, A. Speirs, S. Baker and J. Symons. Cr Overend made the usual declaration and took his seat. The minutes of .previous meetings were read and confirmed, Cr Baker proposed, and Or Stiles seconded, That this Council wishes to express its sincere sympathy, with Mr P. Henneasy, past Mayor, in bis bereavement, and that the clerk be instructed to convey this token of sympathy to him, Carried.^ The inward correspondence was read. The engineer (Mr Nye), was present, and put in a report of the works in progress. The Mayor reported that Reserves Committee had visited the new site for a night soil depot. Proposed by Or Symons, seconded by' Or Speirs, 1 That Mr W. Gray M granted permission to put a. pipe through the foothpath to carry off storm water only, the work to be done by the Borough foreman, Carried. The usual reports were read. Proposed by Or Gower, seconded by Cr Baker, That Mrs Nelson be informed that the Council will take over the*houae that she proposes to build on Borough Reserve at half valuation when her lease expires. Carried/ Proposed by Cr Spiers, seconded by Cr Symons, That another £SOO of the street lean be applied for. Carried. Proposed by Or Baker, seconded by Or Gower, That in reference to the complaint made by the Inspector of Nuisances about urinal at rear of Borough office, that the nuisance be n attended to at once. Further that a proper and complete convenience be built at rear of Chambers for use of public. Carried. ' Proposed by Or Stiles, seconded by Cr Baker, That on a recommendation from Library Committee the Council get the following necessary work done to reading room and Librarian’s cottage. That the Library room, be papered andceiled, and an extra lamp provided, and that three rooms and passage in: libraian’s cottage, be papered and ceiled and also five sheets of iron be placed on scullery roof. Carried. Proposed by Or Stiles, seconded by Or Baker, That it be an instruction to the Library Committee to purchase books to amount of £ls. Carried. - Proposed by the Mayor, seconded bv Cr Gower, That this Council, by virtue of “ The Municipal Corporations Act, igoo, and amendments,” “The Rating Act, 1894, and amendments," and the “ Public Library Act," do now strike a general rate* or fifteen pence in the £> and a library rate of one penny In the £, on annual rental value of the whole of the rateable properties within the Borough for the period commencing Ist . April, 1903, and terminating on the"3lst March, 1904, to be due and payable |n one sum at the Council office on 14th July, 1903. Carried. , , , ■ Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the Borough overseer be instructed to put gates on Government Reserve at entrance to new nightsoil depot, and obtain locks to secure same. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, Thai Messrs Purcell ■ Bros, be informed that this Council will put up a windmill on reserve in return for nightsoil site granted by them, re the condition that Messrs Bros, oil, paint and keep said mill in good order during the term of their lease. The mill is to be obtained as sooa as the well is sunk. Further that the nightsoil contractor be instructed to sink a well for his use inside gate of new reserve. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Coley, That the M.H.R. for the district, Job Vila, Esq., be asked to visit the town and meet the Council in reference to general wants of the Borough prior to the sitting of Parliament. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Baker, That the reports as read be adopted, and the accounts be passed for payment. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Baker, That all carts required by the Borough are to be supplied by the Borough carter, Mr H. Coley. Carried. Proposed by Cr Overend, seconded -•> by Cr Coley, That Mr Cook be granted the extra shilling a day asked for, and also fid a day be granted to Mr Hill. Carried,
Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Coley, That the conditions reciuirad by the Railway Department be complied with in reference to the gates through tha reserves. Carried. The matter of cutting the trees m Victoria Park was considered by the Council, and it was decided to open the tenders received. . The following were receipted lA.I A. Dudson, U i os; J. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Coley, That the School Committee be allowed to cart soil trom Russell street along the drain as asked for to bind sand fillings in school ground. Carried. , ~ Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Symons, That this Council hold a fortnightly meeting on every fourth Monday during the expenditure of the streets loan. Carried. The Council then adjourned.
