Owing to Moorish brigandage on the frontier the Governor of Algeria (M. Jounart) made a tour,'- accompanied by a number of civilians and officers, flanked by spaliis (Algerian soldiers in the French service ) M. Jouaard accepted the invitation of Amel, a chief of the Fignigs, to visit the Fignigs, As they were returning to Dxenniuddar, with Amel’s party, they were attacked by six hundred of the Fignig inhabitants, who, concealed in the inequalities of the ground on both sides of the narrow pass of Zenagua, fired volleys continuously for some considerable distance.. Seventeen spaliis were wounded. The Moorish loss was seven, some being bayoneted. Amel is indignant at the outrage. He expressed the eagerness of Morocco to second the efforts of France to maintain order. M. Jounart-replied that Morocco was powerless to restrain the tribes, adding that France would not patrol the frontier. It was announced later in Paris that a punitive detachment was leaving Algiers to surround the Fignig brigands.
