Death of Mr Morgan.

Yesterday there passed away at his daughter’s residence in the Avenue, Mr George Morgan, one of the colony’s early settlers, having landed in Nelson in the year 1843, on the 3rd April. , The deceased came with his parents by the ship “ Martha Ridgway,” and during his long life met the inevitable experiences of the early colonist.. For many of the first years in the colony the deceased followed the business of a sawyer, and helped to cut the timber used in the erection Of the Albion wharf, Nelson. He met with the rough times that followed the breaking up of the New Zealand Company, when provisions were so scarce that the settlers were driven to eat the sets of potatoes. At another time whilst employed on the survey party a flood cut off all reach of provisions, as they were situated on a point between two rivers. Here for seven days tho party bad to live on sow thistles and a pannioan of flour each a day. * The deceased was born at Stduif-, bridge, where he was working iOhFoiv; ter’s ironworks in Staffordshire. In 1856 he was married:,at’ Brighiwater, and Mrs Morgan is also an early colonist, having arrived at.NeUo.Q with her parents in 1842. she having.been born near Dundee. The deceased had the misfortune to lose bis father, Step-mother and a sister in one day, they having been drowned by the upsetting of a boat at the Wes-,, tern entrance ol the Waimea,* anjd though continual search was made the bodies were never found. There are five sons and -one daughter and the widow left, the children , being all married except George:' Death was not unexpected, as the deceased had been ailing, for a long time.
