Foxton Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held last night at 7.30. Present— Crs Westwood, Gower, Symons, Speirs, Baker, Walsh, Coley, Austin and Stiles. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Austin, That Cr T. Westwood take the chair. The chairman on taking the chair said the first business was the election of a new Mayor, and he read the letter from the late Mayor resigning the position. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the Council regrets very much the resignation of Mr P. Hennessy as Mayor, and desire to express its sympathy with him from his leaving office. Further that the clerk be instructed to write to Mr Hennessy and convey to him the expressions of this Council, and thank him for his very valuable services he has rendered. Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Walsh, That Cr T. Westwood be elected to the office of Mayor. The chairman said that the office was not of his seeking, and he thought that the amount of work the late Mayor had put in made it hard for any one to follow. He wished it to be distinctly understood that he would not accept the position unless a proper official to superintend the works of the Borough were appointed. Cr Speirs said that the office of an Inspector of Works could well be left over for a month or so. There being no other nominations for the office of Mayor, the chairman declared the motion carried, and he thanked the Council for the honor of electing him as Mayor. Ordinary business was then proceeded with. The minutes of the last meeting were read nod confirmed.

Inward and outwafd correspondence was read, also the Overseeria and Inspector of N usiances’ reports. Proposed by Cr Symons, seconded by-Cr Speirs, That the reports as read be adopted. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Baker, That the clerk write to Messrs Webb Bros, requesting them to remove the poplars from the big drain and repair the drain, and also , to write to Mr Puroeil asking him to prevent his cattle trespassing in the big drains. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Or Gower, That Cr Stiles be appointed to sign cheques in place of P. J. Hennessy, resigned. Carried. A petition signed by a number of residents in Jenksand other streets was read, asking that the trees on the hill at south end of Victoria Park be cut. Proposed by Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr Walsh, That the Reserves Committee visit the locality of Jenks-street re catting down trees as asked for, and that they instruct the clerk as to what is necessary to be done, and that tenders be-advertised for the work and lenders be in by Monday, ißth inst. Carried. Proposed by Or Walsh, seconded by Or Stiles, That a lamp be purchased and erected at the east end of Jenksstreet. Carried. Proposed by Or Gower, seconded by Cr Symons, That the accounts as read be passed for payment. Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Coley, That the Public Works Committee instruct the day men to form a path from the main path to the Borough office. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Gower, That the Inspector of Nuisances' attention be drawn to by-law of Section 2, re paper and rubbish in streets. Carried. ■, Proposed by Cr Stiles, seconded ‘by Cr Baker, That the resolution passed by the Council of 4th May appointing a Public Works Committee be rescinded, and that, the whole Council sit as a Public Works Committee. Carried. Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Symons, That the Town Clerk obtain price of tar from Auckland, and if the price is considered reasonable to order 20 more casks Carried. . Proposed by Cr Walsh, seconded by Cr Stiles, That steps be taken to open a road into the new night-soil depot, and that a suitable windmill be erected at the well in Mr Purcell’s reserve as compensation for use of the land, the night-soil contractor to be allowed the use of the well; The Reserve Committee to report on Monday next. Carried. Proposed by Cr Symons, seconded by Cr Gower, That the Reserve Committee visit the ferry house and report what should be done by next meeting. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Gower, That tbe estimates of receipts arid expenditure for the year 1903 4be adopted, Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Symons, That this Council by virtue of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, and amendment, the Rating Act, 1894, and amendments, and the Public Libraries Act, 1869, do hereby notify its intention to strike a,general rate of fifteen pence in the £, and a Library rate of one penny in the £ on the annual rental value of the whole of the rateable properties within the Borough on Monday, Bth June, 1903, for the period commencing Ist April, 1903, and ending on 31st M.arch, 1904, to be due and payable in one sum at the Council office on the Ist day of July, 1903. Carried. Proposed by Cr Stiles, seconded by by Cr Baker, That the Town Clerk be instructed to furnish the Council at next general meeting a list of hawkers and pedlars at present holding licenses, with a view of enforcing licenses to unlicensed hawkers. Carried. Proposed by Cr Symons, seconded by Cr Speirs, That the Town Clerk be instructed to apply to Treasury lor £SOO on account of loan. Carried. Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Symons. That the new street leading to the wharf be called Wharf Street. Carried. The Council then adjourned.
