Egypt.

Lord Cromer, British Minister in Egypt, has announced that despite an exceptionally bad year Egypt will have a surplus of £716,000. Soudan, he says, is making marked material, moral and commercial progress. The closing of the gates of the Assiout dam in August last has, Lord Cromer says, saved £600,000 worth of crops Owing to physical difficulties, he doubts the necessity or the practicability of continuing the Nile railway to Uganda and the Cape. Lord Cromer adds that there were obvious objections to the Government constructing a great irrigation reservoir, at Lake Tsana, in Abyssinia, even though King Menelik was friendly to the scheme.
