DISCOURAGEMENT OP SETTLERS. The Daily Express states that a dozen Australians who were prepared to invest thirty thousand pounds in farms in South Africa are returning home in disgust. They declare that no encouragement has been given them, the Government land settlement schemes being impracticable. A NEW TRAINING GROUND. The British Government has purchased thirty-six miles of land near Middlebury for the purpose of a military training ground, and is erecting cantonments, for five 'thousand troops. A TRANSVAAL RAILWAY PROJECT. Louis Botha has Joined with others ia an important land and railway project embracing a large tract of country in the Vryheid district) north of Laing’s Nek,- Transvaal, recently included in Natal A survey has been made from a new seaport on the Natal Coast, fifty miles nearer the Rand than Durban. ZULULAND THREATENED : WITH FAMINE. The Standard states that Zululand is threatened with famine. The Government is supplying women, children and aged persons with mealies, likewise such adult meu as are willing to work.
