The Telephone.

This morning advantage was taken of the presence of Mr Furby, of the Telegraph Department in Foxton by the Mayor and certain residents-to interview him On telephone matters. The meeting Was held in the Postmaster’s private room, which was packed, there being present the Mayor, and Messrs J. Stevens, E. Osborne, Thos. Westwood, Q. Stiles, E. Smith and E, S. Thynne. The Mayor opened the discussion by stating that the object of the deputation was to persuade the department to extend the telephone connection direct With Moutoa and Shannon, talcing advantage of 'the private line running to the Motoa Estate. He said the convenience would be great as the district was now, but would be more so when the Motoa Estate Was sold, as Mr Stevens expected to be able to place one hundred people on the land Mr Furby pointed out that the Department had already ordered a wire between Tokoraaru and Shannon, and thus there would be directly a connection with Shannon through Palmerston. He doubted if the business would at present warrant the cost of direct communication with Shannon, but if business increased the direct route could be considered.

Mr Stevens said the owners of Motoa would gladly hand over the telephone wire running to the estate if that would facilitate matters.

The impossible having been thus faced, the Mayor thanked Mr Furby for his attention and the deputation left.
