TRAIN EXCURSIONS.
TO THE EDITOR' OP THE MANAWATU HERALD. Sir, —For some years past I have, with others, been connected with the advancement of Athletic Sports, and the Committee of these sports have on several occasions asked the Government to provide a special train to run from Palmerston North and Feilding to Foxton to further the interests of these Sports. In every case that has come under my notice the Railway Department have asked for a guarantee of £l6 odd to run a special from Palmerston North, and £27 to run a special from Feilding. I am led to believe that a special train was run from Palmerston North to Foxton on the 17th inst. (St. Patrick’s Day) without a guarantee of any kind, and as I am under the impression that the special train was arranged for the benefit of a section of the public of Foxton Lshould like to know why a guarantee was not asked for by the Railways, as was required in the case of the Sports Committee. J. F. OvEREND, A Member of Athletic Sports. [We cannot reply to query, as we do uot know if any guarantee was paid or not. We hold the opinion that it pays the railway to meet any movement which encourages the use of its line.— Ed. M.H.]
